INEC withdraws motion for substituted service
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has withdrawn its motion seeking an order of the Federal High Court in Abuja allowing it to serve the recall petition on Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, through substituted means rather than personal service. Justice Nnamdi Dimgba struck out the motion after INEC’s lawyer, Mr. Yunus Ustaz (SAN), announced its withdrawal in court on Thursday. Ustaz also maintained on Thursday that Melaye had been “dodging” service, as an attempt by the INEC to serve Melaye during the Senate’s plenary on Tuesday also failed. The judge also directed that all issues pertaining to the case should thereafter be taken to the Court of Appeal. He noted that since Melaye’s appeal against the court’s September 11 judgment of the court had been entered at the Court of Appeal, all pending applications, including the ones filed by Melaye for stay of execution of the verdict, should be taken to the Court of Appeal. Highlighting challenges of Pan-Africanism at felabration 2017
Felabration, the yearly public lecture held in honour of music maestro and political activist, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, took place last week. It had as theme ‘40 Years After Festac, 20 Years After Fela… Wither The Pan-African Dream?’ The keynote speaker was Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kenyan School of Law, Prof. Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba. Panelists and moderators of the discussion were the Executive Editor, The Guardian, Mr. Abraham Ogbodo, media entrepreneur, Mrs. Kadaria Ahmed and activist, lawyer and Fela’s personal lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana. Initiated by the eldest child and daughter of the Afrobeat musician, Yeni Kuti, the event is a festival of music and arts in commemorating life and times of the musical icon. Lumumba, who spoke passionately on the pan-African topic, engaged participants for almost an hour about facts and figures of the effects of continuing imperialism on Africa and Africans.
